On 16 September 2021, the Constitution Building Programme of International IDEA hosted an expert panel on “Constitutionalizing Institutions for a Safer Environment”, part two of a series on Conversations on Innovative Constitutional Design Options.
This webinar was launched by Dr Kevin Casas-Zamora, Secretary-General of International IDEA. Introductory remarks on Constitutions and the Environment were provided by Dr David R. Boyd, United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and the Environment.
Country experts from Kenya, Hungary, and Brazil presented a broad spectrum of institutional frameworks established to monitor and enforce environmental rights. Professor Patricia Kameri-Mbote presented the Environment and Land Court in Kenya. Professor Marcel Szabó outlined the role of the Ombudsman for Future Generations in Hungary, and Ms. Maria Antonia Tigre discussed the Ministerio Público environmental prosecutors in Brazil.
