Getty Images and the Unstereotype Alliance – an advertising industry-led coalition, convened by UN Women - unveiled a new mural at United Nations Headquarters titled, ‘Look Back, Move Forward’. The mural showcases the role imagery has played in defining gender over the decades through a broad selection of print advertisements depicting both men and women, dating back 75 years to the post-WWII period.
Why?
Some promising progress has been made in terms of the depictions of women in advertising, but the evolution of men in today’s world shows quite a shocking contrast – in fact, it demonstrates how the portrayals of masculinity and ‘the successful man’ have barely changed over time.
