Afghanistan's northern provinces, the breadbasket of the country, are facing severe Moroccan Locust infestation for the second consecutive year, posing a significant threat to the country's wheat production, vegetation and food security. The UN Food & Agricultural Organization (FAO) intervened by training government staff to conduct surveys. This has allowed them to identify 1,142 sites infested with locust egg pods, covering a total area of 3,864 hectares. If left untreated the locusts could rapidly spread to other areas.
