The UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) collaborates closely with local women leaders and their communities, prioritizing their involvement in decisions regarding their protection. In regions where security and defense forces are scarce, locally established Women's Protection Teams serve as early warning systems, enabling victims of sexual and gender-based violence to identify avenues for assistance and support.

About Breaking Barriers
--------------------------------------
The UN Department of Peace Operations’s Strategic Communications Section (SCS) and SSRU have joined forces on a landmark advocacy campaign on gender equality and women's participation in national security and defense sectors.

One of the objectives of this campaign is to honour women's journeys in security and defence sectors in post-conflict contexts by telling powerful stories of how they are preventing conflict and sustaining peace by delivering effective and responsive security services to their communities. The campaign will also spotlight countries' good practices in promoting equal opportunities for women to serve in the national security and defence services.
