The Security Council referred today (8 Apr) to the Committee on the Admission of New Members the request that renewed consideration will be given to the application of the Observer State of Palestine during the month of April 2024.

The request by the Observer State of Palestine to renew consideration of its 23 September 2011 application for admission to membership in the UN was conveyed in a 2 April letter to the Secretary-General.

The Secretary-General transmitted the request to the Security Council (S/2024/286).

On 11 November 2011 Committee of the Security Council reported that was unable to reach a unanimous recommendation on the Palestinian application.

In November 2012 the General Assembly adopted a resolution granting to Palestine the status of non-member observer State in the United Nations.

Previously, until 2012, Palestine had observer status in the General Assembly, but the Assembly's decision on this matter did not say that it was presented to it as a state.

UN Charter Chapter II, Article 4 «Membership in the United Nations is open to all other peace-loving states which accept the obligations contained in the present Charter and, in the judgment of the Organization, are able and willing to carry out these obligations».

The admission of any such state to membership in the United Nations will be affected by a decision of the General Assembly upon the recommendation of the Security Council.
